  Willows Vineyard

The Willows Vineyard, situated at Light Pass in South Australia's Barossa Valley, has roots that go back to the very beginning of the Barossa.

Johann Gottfried Scholz settled in the Barossa Valley in 1845 as part of the colonisation of this superb valley and took up land that is now the Willows Vineyard. Previously a bonesetter in the Prussian army, Johann found his skills in demand as settlers fractured bones as they cleared the land, so he started a small hospital on the property.

The Scholz family, as well as being involved in the medical profession, ran a mixed farm on the property, first planting vines in 1936 followed by vineyard expansion in the 1960s. It was these vines that encouraged the sixth generation to break with the medical tradition and begin making wine. The wines of the Willows Vineyard were born with the release of the first vintages in 1989.

Peter's winemaking is the outcome of a Roseworthy College education followed by experience with several wineries in the Barossa. However much of the credit must go to Peter's grandfather for establishing the vineyard over 60 years ago and his father for his continued vineyard expansion and vision. The access to grapes produced by deep rooted mature vines, with controlled yields and the advantage of plenty of sunshine, is the cornerstone of the wine quality produced under the Willows Vineyard label.

The wines produced by the Scholz family are typical of the Barossa, showing full flavours and long soft structure. The Willows Vineyard has received many accolades for its wines, iIWC Golds for both Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz and the International Wine Challenge Best Semillon Trophy ifor its Semillon.
