At Bowen Estate there are 12 individual Cabernet vineyards, which combined produce our 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine. Each vineyard is hand pruned using an arched cane system pioneered in Coonawarra by Bowen Estate. This system allows ultimate control over quality, ensuring consistency over vintages.
All vineyards are picked separately during the harvest to assess quality and are individually made, finally being blended prior to bottling.
This is a wine of vibrant colour, ripe fruit with hints mulberry, blackberry and dusty oak tannins. Palate medium bodied with good weight and abundance of fruit flavours finishing with velvet smooth tannins. The use of both French and Russian oak gives this wine great complexity and depth whilst showing integrated elegant fruit characters.

Bowen Estate's Shiraz is hand pruned and trellised with the 'hanging cane' method. This allows the grapes to utilize the sunshine to obtain optimum ripeness and flavour. The grapes are machine harvested, crushed and fermented on skins for 5 days. Approximately one third of the wine is barrel fermented in new wood each year. After racking, the balance of the wine is put into American oak barriques (225 litres) for maturation for about 20 months. The wine is then removed from the barrels, blended and bottled.
A lovely bright opulent wine with seductive sweet fruit, showing ripe spicy Shiraz flavours with a matching background of supple oak characters. The palate is medium bodied, well-rounded, finishing with soft tannins. This wine is made in the classic Coonawarra Shiraz style. The vintage of 2001 was characterised by wines that are fruit driven, elegant with a lovely palate structure of soft tannins and excellent palate weight.

"Doug Bowen makes some of the most elegant wines in Australia. This finely crafted, scented, complex, age-worthy Shiraz disproves the theory that Coonawarra is better suited to Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon." Tim Atkin (The Observer)

The Bowen Estate Story

"Doug Bowen makes some of the most elegant wines in Australia." Tim Atkin (The Observer)
THE STORY
Owned and operated by Doug and Joy Bowen, Bowen Estate lies towards the southern end of the famous Coonawarra wine region. Winemaker-daughter Emma Bowen has now joined the winemaking team, having graduated from the Wagga Winemaking Course and gained experience with Simon Gilbert Wines and in France.
Established in 1972 on premium terra rossa soil, the first vintage from Bowen Estate was in 1975. The original vineyard of 12 hectares has now been expanded to 33 hectares following the purchase of two neighbouring properties. The plantings consist of mainly the red grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, with smaller plantings of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Viognier.
In the vineyard at Bowen Estate, all vines are individually pruned by hand to ensure each vine produces maximum quality. Hand pruning enables us to restrict the crop size which results in wines that are fuller in body and have greater depth of colour and longevity.
The wines from Bowen Estate show the hallmark of the winemaking and viticultural skills of Doug Bowen and have become, over the years, 'classic Coonawarra' benchmarks. Bowen Estate produces a selected range of table wine able to be drunk now, or given ideal cellaring conditions will mature beautifully.
